In March, we had the privilege of hosting:

Joe McDonagh who spoke about his experiences developing groundbreaking video games including Bioshock and Halo Infinite, and how to build strong creative teams.

Olivia Ting, a hard-of-hearing designer and installation artist. She demonstrated how she merges sight, sound, and lack of sound in her incredible art installations.

UW professors and AI specialists Jeffrey Bilmes and Tim O'Brien who spoke to us about the future of AI and how it might manifest itself in the design industry, potential ethical considerations, and the current state of practical concerns.

We learned about the detailed processes, psychology, and archeology of the world of costume and set design from Yale costume designer Sarah Nietfeld.

Finally, we learned about how to form meaningful relationships and building trust to align on common goals with psychotherapist, Jennifer Petty.

Architect, artist, and Creative Director at SABA, Annette Jannotta has over 20 years of expertise collaborating with clients who are leaders in their industries and passionate about what they do. From Life Sciences, research, and higher education to hospitality and the arts, Annette helps her clients create places that invite people to thrive with ease. Through a collaborative process that magnifies empathy and imagination, she recognizes that how we work is just as important as where we work. Annette’s award-winning projects weave together experiences, discoverable over time, that inspire engagement, ownership, and transformation of both the team working to create the space, as well as those able to use the final product. Annette is a licensed architect in California, an NCIDQ certified interior designer, LEED AP ID&C, and a member of IIDA.

Boulder, CO and Seattle, WA – June 1, 2023 - Boulder Associates announces the acquisition of SABA, a Seattle-based architecture and interior design firm. Boulder Associates has specialized exclusively in the design and planning of healthcare spaces for 40 years; the incorporation of SABA's 20-year history of design excellence creates a unique opportunity for shared expertise across healthcare sectors while expanding into the science and technology, commercial, workplace, non-profit, and education sectors in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

BA's four-decade portfolio of projects encompasses all aspects of healthcare and senior living, as well as design research, planning, and operational consulting through BA/Science. The addition of SABA's Seattle-based practice will serve both firms' existing healthcare clients and allow SABA's additional multi-sector expertise to expand throughout BA's nationwide network.

In the Details: Staircase Design

Choosing a contemporary expression, referencing the building’s concrete structure the stair is made of precast concrete treads, which was detailed so it visually floats in the opening. Steel plate guardrails with a wood hand rails add a sense of openness, while the wood wall running the height of the stair brings warmth into the building and serves as a back drop for the stair.

Swinerton Builders and SABArchitects are currently expanding our ongoing partnership with the new design/build construction of this 12,500 SF early education center on the UC Santa Cruz campus. The center will serve 140 children in a Family Student Housing development.

Swinerton Builders and SABArchitects are currently expanding our ongoing partnership with the new design/build construction of this 12,500 SF early education center on the UC Santa Cruz campus. The center will serve 140 children in a Family Student Housing development. 

The project presents numerous interesting challenges and opportunities including Triple Net Zero sustainability requirements, energy modeling and stakeholder presentations to increase community comfort with the proposed land use. The design extends the learning environment outdoors to areas of play. In coordination with Eric Nelson, the team has created an outdoor classroom for each age group designed with emphasis on natural exploration.

The Early Education Center has been uniquely paired with the Psychology department at UCSC which establishes a direct relationship between the playful learning environment of children and the intellectual world of the University. The design/build team has incorporated research rooms adjacent to each classroom to facilitate observation and analysis of early education environments.

We were pleased to attend the PSBJ's 2023 Economic Outlook at the new Seattle Convention Center. It was a privilege to hear from local leaders and economists, and to take an honest look at the challenging but promising years ahead for our region.

We were pleased to attend the PSBJ's 2023 Economic Outlook at the new Seattle Convention Center. It was a privilege to hear from local leaders and economists, and to take an honest look at the challenging but promising years ahead for our region. 

Despite economic headwinds, Seattle remains one of the most desirable and economically fruitful cities on the West Coast. SABA views shifts in the commercial office market as an incredible opportunity for our city to explore equitable housing, green spaces, hospitality, childcare and a renewed vision for the urban heart of Seattle. 

In addition, we and our partners continue to deliver work for the ever-growing Biotech communities in Seattle, Bothell, and Everette and essential healthcare providers in Washington and Spokane.

The venue serves at as reminder that Seattle is a city ever-opening to the world and the Economic Outlook gave us hope for a Seattle full of potential.  We look forward to exploring these ideas with you in 2023-24.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings that respond to their surroundings and function as a unified organism in the landscape. A detailed study of any of his projects reveals a sequence deliberate visitor experiences from the outdoors to a sense of shelter, and frequently strong connections to a hearth or fireplace.
Wright used spatial concepts include changing volumes, a sense of shelter and place, and frequent opportunities to connect to nature, both visually and physically through specific design elements.
Decades later, Roger Ulrich explicitly built on this with focused studies on healthcare spaces, nature, and the impact on recovery. The basis is that well designed spaces with a connection to place and nature reduce stress and relax people and promote better outcomes.
Healthcare also consists of a sequence of experiences. Exceptional health care uses good design to organize a rational geometry to create wayfinding and a sense of place that result in an experience where the visitor feels a similar sense of comfort, shelter and connection to nature that Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings did.
Corridors that have access to daylight and visual objectives to nature and the outdoors are perceived as much more comfortable than similar lacking daylighting or vistas.
The common theme is deliberate design objectives for the sequence of spaces that is well thought out and enhances the patient experience.

SABA is excited to participate in this year's AIA Film Challenge! This year's prompt was 'Blueprint for Better' and encouraged teams to projects with high community impact and focus. ART+HOME is a video focused on SABA's ongoing work with Path with Art.
Path with Art is a Seattle non-profit aimed at helping individuals affected by trauma and homelessness find stability, meaning, and community through art. Now, in partnership with Plymouth housing and SABArchitects, they will finally have a home base in the Seattle area. This 'Art Home' will enable Path with Art to host additional classes, house exhibitions, and drive their mission in support of Seattle's under-served communities.

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health's new clinic at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Northgate is set to open Oct. 18.

"Virginia Mason Franciscan Health's new clinic at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Northgate is set to open Oct. 18.

The 5,400 square-feet facility offers primary care and sports medicine expertise for the Northgate neighborhood, as well as on-site lab and X-ray services, a physical therapy gym and private consultation room inside the $80 million Seattle Kraken training facility, which opened in September.

It's the first clinic to open since Virginia Mason merged with CHI Franciscan Health in early 2021.

"This pavilion ... delivers on our promise to increase access to high-quality health care in our community,” said Virginia Mason Franciscan Health CEO Ketul J. Patel. “Our team is excited to begin welcoming patients to this innovative new space.”

In addition to a neighborhood clinic, the facility will also house the Kraken's medical staff and treat its players, coaches and staff, as the team's official medical provider.

“Virginia Mason Franciscan Health has been a great partner of ours since the beginning, and are already playing a big role in keeping our players and staff healthy,” said Tod Leiweke, CEO of the Seattle Kraken. “The convenience of having them on site, and their commitment to youth hockey, makes this partnership beneficial for our organization and the community.

Planning for the pavilion, designed by Seattle-based SABArchitects, began in June 2020."

Duane Jonlin, FAIA, Energy Code Advisor for Seattle's SDCI, highlights a number of new and significant provisions in the upcoming "2018" Washington state and Seattle energy codes, each provision leading towards sharply reduced energy consumption and carbonemissions from our built environment. Daniella Moreano Wahler, PE, of PAE Engineers, suggests the smartest and most economical means of complying with (or exceeding) these requirements, so that we will all feel comfortable discussing options with our clients and consultants.

During the period that the Flagship Macy’s (previously Bon Marche) store occupied this historic building, this room functioned as the alterations shop where tailors worked to customize clothes. They used a variety of equipment like mechanical sewing machines, a large seam press, and more to creatively complete their work.

During the period that the Flagship Macy’s (previously Bon Marche) store occupied this historic building, this room functioned as the alterations shop where tailors worked to customize clothes. They used a variety of equipment like mechanical sewing machines, a large seam press, and more to creatively complete their work.

What was once a workshop for craft and creativity has now been transformed into a workplace common area, where people can collaborate and enjoy each other’s company. Pairing something old with something new, SABA was able to create a modern and vibrant space while paying homage to the cultural history of the building it occupies. 

The entrance to the Tailor Shop features a historic photo of tailors from 1948 paired with a bright neon sign that serves to preserve the original name of the historic Tailor Shop space. The long hallway graphic is a recreation of vintage sewing patterns overlaid with a glossary of sewing stitches; the vintage patterns reappear on the glass graphics inside the space in a collage format that also provide privacy as needed.
